Can you get skin cancer by.....?

okay last summer I only wore sunscreen when I went out on a boat and that's it! I didn't get a sunburn (I'm half Greek) I nvr sunburn just tan, is it dangerous this yr im planning to wear sunscreen if it is!!??? thank you (:
